Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5: Volume 1: Review
Part 3 and Part 4 of the series follows the heist in the Bank of Spain. The professor plan for the heist to melt the 90 tonnes of gold in the base of the bank into 2mm balls and basically, steal it all.
In Part 3, some new characters are introduced. We can see that the plan is not as foolproof as it was for the Royal Mint of Spain heist. In Part 3, the characters come together again to rescue Rio, who was captured and being tortured by Sierra.
The gang goes through their plan and this time, the police get too close to the professor with Lisbon being arrested, panic ensues. The professor had not planned for this, the part ends with him declaring DEFCON 2, saying, “the war had begun”.
Part 4 has a lot of civil war between the gang. The inner conflict between them causes issues and difficulties in the smooth running of the plan. The plan wasn’t going perfect anyways, so the tension is seen among the team. In all this conflict and talks with the police, the chief of security of the bank, Gandía kills Nairobi.
The professor exposes the torture of Rio and capturing of Lisbon by the police to the public causing more resentment towards the police corps. The professor helps Lisbon escape when is being transferred to the supreme court and the part concludes with her joining the team in the Bank of Spain.
Part 5 of the series pickups exactly where it left off in part 4 as it did from Part 1 to Part 2 and from Part 3 onwards. The chaotic nature of the series continues as it never really left, it is as anxiety-inducing as it was in Part 1.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5 Volume 1: The End of the Road
Part 5 of the series pickups exactly where it left off in part 4 as it did from Part 1 to Part 2 and from Part 3 onwards. The chaotic nature of the series continues as it never really left, it is as anxiety-inducing as it was in Part 1.
The episode begins with Lisbon, as she had just descended from the helicopter at the Bank of Spain. Gandía is captured and tied down by the gang as they use him as leverage against Tamayo. Lisbon tries to contact Professor through radio but receives no answer. When contacted again, they find out that the professor has been captured by Sierra who they still believe is an inspector.
Tamayo calls in the army for immediate intervention, making it clear that now he wants to kill the gang even if it is at the cost of the lives of the hostages. Tamayo calls upon Major Sagasta, who has served in Afghanistan, Yemen, etc. Tamayo is becoming more and more agitated as the situation is getting out of his hand. When he believes that he has the upper hand, the gang finds or does something that gives them an advantage and Tamayo gets more frantic. Ángel tries to puts some sense into him.
In a flashback sequence, we see Berlin meeting his son in a cafe to talk to him about the heist. Hinting towards something that is yet to come in the latter part of the season.
The disturbed mind of Berlin is seen as he degrades his son through his words. Berlin tricking his son from a young age to study cybersecurity from one of the best universities just so his son can aid him in his future heist displays Berlin’s messed up approach towards others who depend on him.
The gang find out about Professor being captured and believe that he is caught by the police, which causes the biggest hindrance to their plans. Lisbon takes charge and leads the team towards the next step that should be done as the army is approaching the Bank of Spain with a lot of soldiers.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5 Volume 1: Do You Believe in Reincarnation?
Lisbon, Tokyo and Stockholm lead the hostages out of the Bank of Spain to surrender and negotiate terms with Tamayo still believing that the professor has been arrested by them. Tamayo is ready to arrest all three of them but Ángel makes him realize that arresting them in front of the world will them look like the bad guys.
As Tamayo is negotiating terms with Lisbon for Gandía release, she picks out from the conversation that they do not have the professor under their custody. Gandía tries to induce more conflict between the gang which leads to a hand to hand combat between him and Bogotá. Lisbon stops the fight.
The Governor and Arturo, who are hostages think of escaping when they were out of the bank but plan to become the heroes. When Bogotá and Gandía are being separated, Arturo takes advantage of their foolishness by equipping himself and few other hostages with weapons and armour. He shoots the rifle into the air injuring Denver and a few other hostages as the armed hostages try to escape to a different exit.
All this creates a new problem for the gang. They follow the armed hostages as many gunshots are exchanged. The hostages reach a dead but only 6 of them escape to the other door to the exit where the gang has all of their armoury and ammunition. A long standoff follows with the hostages having access to all the armoury.
Tokyo remembers about a few ammunition hidden where she was held by Gandía. Professor, Marseille and Benjamin are knocked unconscious by Sierra. The power gets to Arturo’s head and he tries to cause a rift between Denver and Stockholm to ruffle Denver. Denver and Stockholm are already not in the best place in their relationship and Stockholm hears the whole exchange between Arturo and Denver. A furious Stockholm approaches the area through the vents and in a confrontation with Arturo, she shoots him.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5: Volume 1 Welcome to the Spectacle of Life
The situation is very intense as Stockholm is trying to revive Arturo after she shot him. No pulse is detected but eventually, he gets a pulse. Arturo is the first person Stockholm has shot, understandably she was not stable. As much as Arturo asked to be shot due to his theatrics and unlikeability, he did not deserve to be killed and this isn’t good for the gang.
Arturo is revived and sent to the police with three other hostages including the governor, so he can get further treatment to survive. Tamayo plans to frame the gang for Arturo’s death and the injured hostages. Stockholm is not in the best place mentally as the father of her child, who could take care of her son as she believes that she and Denver might not be alive.
Tamayo puts Sierra under the bus for coordinating with the professor and conspiring against the CNI. As the professor is trying to show the reality to Sierra, her water breaks. She is determined to give birth all by herself, denying Professor’s help.
Sierra is helpless as the baby isn’t coming out, they find out that it is a breech baby implying she has no choice other than to release the professor. The professor helps Sierra and she gives birth to the baby safely.
As Major Sagasta’s team prepared to breach the Bank of Spain, Palermo takes charge instructing the gang for the defence. Tokyo, Denver and Manila volunteer to be the front guys which put them in the most danger. Major Sagasta and his team get ready to enter the bank via the rooftop by blasting it open.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5 Volume 1: Your Place in Heaven
Major Sagasta’s team blast open the rooftop creating havoc among the public protesting outside the Bank of Spain. The blast causes a 2-ton structure to fall on Helsinki’s feet traping and injuring him. The gang re-figure their position to attack the major’s team. The professor is back on the radio and helps them navigate through it all.
In a flashback scene, Berlin is planning a heist with his son, which will be his first experience. The scene is a long sequence of the planning to the execution. Berlin’s son wasn’t very into the idea of robbery and crime but after the heist, he was pleased as the thrill of it all changes his perspective.
The gang is trying to rescue Helsinki and there are many gunshots exchanged. This episode has a lot of gunfights. Tokyo, Denver and Manila take the hostages to the rooftop with a plan to deceive the snipers by confusing them with the hostages. The chaos created by Matías lets them enter the dining area from the top to help the gang.
The gang helps Helsinki by removing his trapped leg and taking him away from the danger zone. The gang planning leads them to surround Major Sagasta and his team but they are in for a surprise. Gandía has security access to the bank as he was the chief of security.
Major Sagasta sabotages the gang with grenades and traps Tokyo, Denver and Manila in the area by closing the door which was only possible with Gandía’s fingerprints, as the three of them hide in the kitchen.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5 Volume 1: Live Many Lives
Tokyo is having doubts and is in crisis as she keeps on thinking about her ex, René who was killed in a bank heist where she was unable to save him. She reminisces about her time with René in Portugal and Tokyo. The flashback shows her as she is in a hideout for many days after René’s death and the professor finding her to recruit her to the Royal Mint of Spain heist.
Sagasta’s idea is to drill the wall against the pantry and enter the kitchen because Denver and Manila have sealed the entryway by the cast iron stovetop. Gandía is disagreeing with Sagasta and disobeying his orders. Tokyo takes advantage of this by provoking him. Gandía gets rattled and throws a grenade which is thrown back at them by Tokyo which kills his own team member.
Stockholm is getting visions of Arturo and she is not stable. She injects herself with morphine to get rid of those visions. Tokyo hears Sagasta’s team drilling and shoots them in the leg but this doesn’t go well for them.
Sagasta had snipers on them and as Tokyo and Denver run out of the pantry, the snipers shoot Tokyo. Tokyo is heavily wounded with 5 bullets in her as the three of them wait for Sagasta to breach.
Stockholm finds out about the dumbwaiter food lift and informs Denver that they can escape through that shaft. Manila and Denver climb down leaving Tokyo behind as she cannot move her arm to hold the cables. The two of them put some cushions on the bottom of the shaft for Tokyo to have a soft landing when she jumps.
All while Rio is drilling from the bottom of the kitchen floor. He drills a hole through the floor but it is just big enough for his hand to go through. Tokyo realizes that she is badly wounded and now even if she is saved, she might be a liability to the gang. So she decides to stay back and face Sagasta’s team.
Volume 1 ends with Tokyo lying on the ground and Gandía is just about to shoot her but we see her hand is filled with grenade pins. She pulled the pins from the grenades in her vest, sacrifices herself and kills Sagasta and his team along with her.
Money Heist (La Casa De Papel) Part 5 Volume 1 Conclusion
The show has lost its way in any sense from Part 3 and Part 4. Even though Season 2 which is about the whole Bank of Spain heist saga is not the same as the Season 1 of the Royal Mint of Spain one, it still is as chaotic and as intense as it was. The tension building is persistent and assisted with the riveting score throughout the series.
One thing that mainly differs from Season 1 is the calmness that could be sensed in between all the chaos. The calmness that was felt during the flashback scenes of the professor laying out the plan to the gang and the relationship that was built among them all.
That calmness perfectly balanced out the anxiety and anxiousness going on during the heist, this factor is mainly absent in Season 2. There are still many flashback scenes that are there to introduce new characters to the story that does fade us away from the violence but those don’t have the feel to them when compared to Season 1.
