Myth & Mogul: John DeLorean Review
The Netflix docuseries takes a peek into the life of the controversial engineer John DeLorean, his rise in ranks within the General Motors and his dream of making a car under his name for the youth and for the future of automobile industry. The 3-episode docuseries ventures into the aspects that lead to John DeLorean’s downfall.
John DeLorean was an engineer from Detroit and a son of Romanian immigrants. John did not have the best childhood because of his alcoholic father. John DeLorean worked at Chrysler and Packard Motor Company before coming to General Motors. He rose up to the rank of Vice President in General Motors before resigning in 1973.
John DeLorean was not satisfied with the route General Motors was taking and it was a hindrance to his desire to achieve more. John had an ambition of developing a car that appeals to the youth, a car that is not for the rich but for everyone.
He believed that the best car with best engines and top speed are expensive and being driven by the rich who don’t know how to drive them. And the people who know how to drive these cars to its absolute limit can’t afford them. He tried to change that ambition into reality with the car DeLorean.
DeLorean, the car was popular among Americans even before its launch but surpassed its fame all around the world because of the movie, Back to the future. The car, DeLorean was known among the Americans and the British but Back to the future trilogy made the car a worldwide phenomenon.
John DeLorean had an ambition and his lifestyle came in in the way of his success. The controversial car maker made many sketchy decisions and took arguable measures to keep his company afloat. The life of John DeLorean is an interesting one but the events that conspired after he established the DeLorean Motor Company and his choices are debatable. From his cocaine bust to alleged fraud and tax evasion to his bankruptcy, the docuseries showcases it all.
The series presents John DeLorean as a massive figure, someone who is above others in his intelligence, in the way he flaunts his persona but his choices beg to differ. His poor decisions and desperate measures show his negligence and displays how far from reality he actually was. His desire to achieve something more than he was capable of, do something that he did not have the money or even the ability to do drove him to his ruin.
Myth & Mogul: John DeLorean has footage from 1981 documentary, DeLorean directed by D. A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. In their eyes John DeLorean was a man who was not the purest, he had his faults and he made many mistakes but he was a man greater than life. But in reality, it seems like they and others in the documentary give him more credit than he deserves. He was a man whose greed and his recklessness towards what he could not achieve led to his undoing.
