Sing 2 Movie Review

Sing 2 is an animated film that is a sequel to Sing, released in 2016. The plot of Sing 2 is set a few years after Sing and the old characters are back in the sequel, with the introduction of many new ones.

Buster Moon is ready to take the world by storm with his group of misfits who come from various walks of life but they all share a common passion, a passion for singing and performing. Buster’s theatre is more successful than ever and now he believes that the next step for his team is to perform on the stage for Jimmy Crystal in the Redshore City. After being rejected by Suki, he decides that he needs to perform for her boss, Jimmy, to get the gig. So, without any plan, the group leaves for Redshore City.

They somehow manoeuvre their way to the audition and peak Jimmy’s interest in a performance that Gunter comes up with on the spot. Also, Buster assures Jimmy that he knows Clay, a retired rockstar who is ready to perform for them. So without any plot and details about the act in mind, Buster takes up the challenge believing that eventually, he will figure it out.

The plot of the film is the continuation of the first part and there is nothing that makes it extraordinary from the previous one. The characters are perfect just the way they were as if the actors just slid back into the voice and channelled the characters again. The introduction of new characters is essential for the plot to move forward and none of them feels forced into it. The new characters come into the picture and just fit right in.

The story of the film is discrete from Sing and it feels as if it is a continuation with no real substance and pizzaz of its own. The addition of new characters does help but eventually, the driving force that is the plot falls flat as it can’t stand on its own. A sequel desires a new arc with one of the existing characters or with a new one which eventually leads to the development of a story but using the same formula does not make Sing 2 original.

The character of Clay Calloway voiced by Bono is a famous rockstar, who retired after the death of his wife about 15 years ago. Buster’s promise of getting him to his act makes him go meet Clay who lives in a secluded area. Ash, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, is a very big fan of his and knows almost everything about him. After a failed attempt by Miss Crawley, Buster and Ash try to convince Clay to perform for them.

The dynamic between Clay and Ash adds an emotional touch to the film. Even though the connection that they built was barely shown in the second half of the film, it still gives the film a hint of spice in its prequel. The bond between them could have been more fleshed out if given more time and getting Clay to the realization that his wife was his biggest fan and supporter and him performing in front of the world is what she would want him to do adds to the character development of them both. Sing focuses on Meena coming out of her shell and in similar fashion Sing 2 shows the development in Clay.

The animation work of Sing 2 is astonishing and that is what mainly separates this film from the first one. The animation used to build the world of Redshore city is mesmerising. The set design for their act, “Out of this World” is entrancing. The grandiose environment makes the world feel more lived-in and aids to the scale of the animation. The animation in Sing was captivating as it did help in establishing the world of the characters and Sing 2 takes it up a notch by showcasing the skills of Illumination entertainment.

The animation industry has been booming and with a lot of studios like Pixar, Dreamworks, etc, the technology is also developing which makes it possible for such stories to be told in a unique manner.

Sing 2 is a fun movie to watch, the songs and the animation makes the film enticing and the audience who enjoyed the first part will surely enjoy seeing the same characters again. Listening to the song and singing along with them does feel liberating in a sense, where one should not think much and just go with the flow of the film.

The main audience for the film are kids and those kids who watched the first part will love the same formula for the second one. The film serves its target audience in the best way possible with interesting and cute and lovable characters who go through various challenges and overcome them together. The lesson the film wants to convey is straightforward and effective for its audience.

Sing 2 Movie Critical Reception
