The Marvel Cinematic Universe in Chronological Order

Marvel studios started their journey with Robert Downey Junior’s Iron Man of 2008 and it turned out to be a massive hit. Now Iron Man has become a pop-cultural phenomenon. Iron Man showed the massive possibilities of Marvel movies. Marvel began its journey in 2008 and it has now reached its fourth phase. After releasing 32 movies that are connected with one another, watching the Marvel movies in order has become more complex. In order to understand its chronological order, the list is given below.  

The list which is given below is based on the timeline of Marvel movies-

Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger (Phase-1)

Captain America: The First Avenger of 2011 introduced Marvel’s first avenger who fought against Hitler and Nazi Armies. The story revolves around the time of 1942 to 1943 of MCU and Tony’s father Howard Stark featured heavily in this movie.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel (Phase-3)

Captain Marvel of 2019 gave the first glimpse of Marvel’s one of the strongest superwomen. This recent movie actually comes second on the list based on the MCU timeline. It tells the story of Carol Denver and the galactic conflict between the Kree and Skrull races. This story was happening in the time of 1995 at MCU.

Iron Man

Iron Man (Phase-1)

Iron Man was released in 2008 and Robert Downey Junior played the role of billionaire Tony Stark. This was the first movie of Marvel Studios and it became a major success for Marvel. This movie also revived the dying career of Robert Downey Junior and made him one of the most loved actors in Hollywood. The movie takes place around the time of 2010 of MCU.

Iron Man 2 (Phase-1)

Iron Man 2 was released in 2010. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury were introduced for the first time in MCU. Thor’s hammer was first mentioned in this movie as well. This movie gave the hope of assembling Avengers among the fans. Black Panther’s Wakanda, Namor’s Atlantis were teased for the first time in this movie.

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk (Phase-1)

The Incredible Hulk was also released in 2008 and the post-credit scene tells Marvel’s idea of making an Avengers movie by Tony’s handing over a file named ‘Avengers Initiative’ to Thunderbolt Ross that connects the movie with the other Marvel movies. The movie revolves around the time of 2011 of MCU.

Thor

Thor (Phase-1)

Thor which was released in 2011, began Marvel’s cosmic characters. Thor movie also tells the story of 2011 MCU. The plot focused on the bitter sibling rivalry between Thor and Loki. Asgard was first introduced in this movie.

The Avengers

The Avengers (Phase-1)

The Avengers was the most important movie of Marvel Studios and it was released in 2012. The story was connected to other Marvel movies and it became a global hit its success helped Marvel to become bolder. The post-credit scene teased the biggest villain of Marvel Phase 3, Mad Titan Thanos.

Iron Man 3 (Phase-2)

Iron Man 3 was the first movie of Marvel Movies’ phase two and was released in 2013. This was Iron Man’s last solo film. In this movie, Ten Rings criminal organization was mentioned for the first time inside MCU. This movie tells the story of 2012 MCU. 

Thor: The Dark World (Phase-2)

Thor: The Dark World of 2013 was the second movie of the Thor series and explored more about Thor’s cosmic world. Dark Elves were introduced through this movie. It also tells the story of how MCU was before its creation. These fictional events happen around 2013 of MCU.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Phase-2)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released in 2014 and explored more about the inner conflicts and corruption in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Bucky returns as brainwashed Hydra agent named the Winter Soldier. The story happens around 2014 at MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy (Phase-2)

Guardians of the Galaxy of 2014 was the first Marvel cosmic movie other than Thor and this movie gave the detailed idea of Infinity stones. Celestials were also seen for the first time in this movie. The movie tells the story of the 2014 MCU.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Phase-3)

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 of 2017 was the second movie of Guardians of the Galaxy and it told the story of Star Lord’s origin. This movie also tells the story of the 2014 MCU.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (Phase-2)

Avengers: Age of Ultron which was released in 2015, was the second team-up movie. Ultron was the primary villain of this movie. Wanda, Quick Silver and Vision were introduced in this movie. This movie ends with the death of Quick Silver. The battle against Ultron happens in 2015 at MCU. 

Ant-Man from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Ant-Man (Phase-2)

Ant-Man of 2015 had more comedic elements than other Marvel movies and this movie also teased the upcoming events of the Civil war. The story also happens around the time of 2015 inside MCU.

Captain America: Civil War (Phase-3)

Captain America: Civil War of 2016 showed the inner rifts between Captain America and Iron Man. This event broke the whole Avengers team into two parts. This movie introduced Spiderman and Black Panther in the MCU. Civil war happens during the 2016 of MCU.

Spider-Man: Homecoming from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Spider-Man: Homecoming (Phase-3)

Spider-Man: Homecoming of 2017 told the story of the friendly neighborhood of Spiderman and it was the first solo movie of Spiderman outside Sony studio. Ironman also made some significant cameos in this film. The story started after the events of the Civil War and was happening in the same year of the Civil War event inside MCU.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange (Phase-3)

Doctor Strange of 2016 was the first movie that was related to magic, reality, and different dimensions. At the end of the movie, Strange becomes the Sorcerer Supreme. The story was happening around 2016 to 2017 inside MCU.

Black Widow (Phase-4)

Black Widow of 2021 tells more about Black Widow’s origin. Task Master and Yelena Belova were introduced in this movie. Russian super-soldier Red Guardian also made a significant cameo in this movie. This movie tells the story of the MCU of 2017 after the split-up of Avengers.

Black Panther

Black Panther (Phase-3)

Black Panther of 2017 was the first solo movie of Wakanda’s prince and it explored more about the fictional country of East Africa. This movie has left a great impact on popular culture. This movie’s incidents also happen during the 2017 MCU.

Thor: Ragnarok (Phase-3)

Thor: Ragnarok of 2017 was the most important movie before the Infinity War event and this movie concludes with the Asgardians settling down the earth. Hela was the primary antagonist in this movie and Surtur was also appeared in this movie. At the end of this movie, Thanos’s giant spaceship was shown which directly connects with Infinity war.  

Ant-Man and the Wasp (Phase-3)

Ant-Man and the Wasp of 2018 gave the solution to the problem of Infinity War. Wasp and Original Wasp were introduced in the MCU through this movie. Quantum realm which became a big event in the Endgame, was also introduced in this movie. The events of this film fall under the time 2017 of MCU.   

Avengers: Infinity War (Phase-3)

Avengers: Infinity War was the biggest movie of 2018 and showed Thanos’s quest for Infinity stones and he wiped the universe’s half of the population out. This movie ends with hopelessness among the fans. Thanos comes on the earth for the first time around 2017 of MCU.

Avengers: Endgame (Phase-3)

Avengers: Endgame of 2019 was the biggest movie of all time and Thanos was defeated in this movie. This was an Avengers’ quest to save the people who were affected by the snap of Thanos. This movie ends the journey of the original members of Avengers. Endgame movie shows the extended time between 2018 and 2023 of Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Loki (Phase-4)

Loki was the different Disney Plus series and introduced the next big villain of MCU. Loki’s journey in this movie has no barrier of time. It just begins after the events of the first Avenger team-up movie.

What If…? (Phase-4)

What If…? Disney Plus series was the first animated series of Marvel. This series is based on the possibilities of different universes from different timelines.

WandaVision (Phase-4)

WandaVision was the first Disney Plus series that shows the mental condition of Wanda. The story was happening around the time of 2023 at MCU.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings (Phase-4)

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings of 2021 tells the origin story of Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings criminal organization. China’s culture is heavily showcased in this movie and the events of this film were happening around 2023 to 2024 of MCU.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Phase-4)

Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the second Disney Plus series and it showed the ill condition of people who suffered the consequences of Thanos’ snap. It also showed what a flawed hero is. Buckey’s traumas were also the focus of this series. But, the primary focussing aspect was racial discrimination which was easy to be identified in many scenes.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (Phase-3)

Spider-Man: Far From Home of 2019 showed the world of post Endgame era and also showed the people who returned after 5 years of Thanos’ snap. The concept of the multiverse was discussed in this movie for the first time inside MCU. This film ends with big trouble for Spiderman after his identity is revealed. It tells the story of the 2024 version of MCU.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (Phase-4)

Spider-Man: No Way Home of 2021 was the biggest Spiderman movie of all time and it connects all the Spiderman universes together. This movie clearly focussed on the Multiverse concept and it set up a major plot for Doctor Strange 2. The events of this film were happening just after the events of the previous Spiderman movie.

Eternals (Phase-4)

Eternals of 2021 tells more about new cosmic villains called Celestials and also showed a new race of superheroes. This movie was different than the traditional Marvel movies. It is fair to say that Marvel has done some experiments with these movies. This film ends with a major cliffhanger. The events of this movie started with the ancient human civilization but ended in the year 2024 of MCU. 

Hawkeye from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Hawkeye (Phase-4)

Hawkeye Disney Plus series connects Netflix’s series with MCU for the first time. Kate Bishop, Kingpin, and Echo are introduced as major characters in this series and they will all have a big future in upcoming MCU projects. Fans also get to know more about Hawkeye’s wife. All the fictional incidents were happening around the Christmas of 2024. According to the MCU timeline, this is the latest show.
