Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been talking about Black Adam of DC comics for a long time. But, it is finally set to release in theatres. With Dwayne Johnson’s involvement, Black Adam’s importance in the DCEU has been increased among movie lovers. DC is famous for giving villains the cinematic spotlight, as evidenced by Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. But the Black Adam is on another level.

A small teaser is already released on DC’s official Youtube channel. But a full-length trailer is yet to be released. Here in the Movie Culture, we are going to discuss everything about the Black Adam movie in the DC Extended Universe.

When is DCEU’s Black Adam arriving in the Theatres?

The Rock has been linked with a Black Adam movie with his production company Seven Bucks and producer Hiram Garcia for years. He first talked about his excitement to play his favourite comic-book character back in 2014. Previously, the film was set to be released in theatres on December 22, 2021. However, that date was cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdowns. The filming was officially wrapped in July 2021. With the DC movie’s official announcement, Black Adam is going to release in theatres on July 29, 2022.

Origin of Black Adam in DC Comics

Origin of Black Adam in DC Comics

In the comics, Black Adam was a slave in Kahndaq who lived 5,000 years ago. His original name was Teth-Adam. He was granted the powers of the Gods like Shazam and was originally referred to as Mighty Adam. He then set out to liberate his people and rule Kahndaq by delivering his own kind of justice. In the end, he was imprisoned by the Gods who bestowed them upon him for abusing his powers.

Dwayne Johnson also gave us some details of his portrayal of Black Adam at WB’s virtual DC FanDome event last summer. He explains Black Adam’s origin by saying “He felt the burdens and the pressures of a larger entity holding him down until he can’t take it anymore”. “He is a ruthless keeper of justice,” Johnson also added. He also talked about his character’s ruthlessness in nature. Black Adam was always considered as an anti-hero by comic book readers and this movie will try to portray the character in the same way.

Cast of Black Adam and Other Super Hero Characters

Black Adam will introduce us to The Justice Society of America (JSA) which is a DC superhero team. This team with the members like Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher, actually pre-dated the Justice League. Johnson described The Justice Society of America as a group that believes in fighting for truth and justice.

Dwayne Johnson will play the role of Black Adam who was imprisoned for 5,000 years. Noah Centineo will take the role of Atom Smasher who is a member of the Justice Society of America. Atom Smasher has the power to control his molecular structure and manipulate his size and strength. Atom Smasher will have a prominent role in the story. Aldis Hodge will play the iconic comic book superhero Hawkman. Sarah Shahi has joined the cast as Adrianna Tomaz who is a university professor and resistance fighter in Kahndaq. It is also expected that she will be Black Adam’s love interest in the movie just like in the DC comics. Pierce Brosnan has the role of Kent Nelson who is Doctor Fate in DC Comics. Quintessa Swindell will portray Cyclone, a member of the JSA and she can control wind and generate sound.

How does Black Adam fit into the DCEU?

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has released a series of lighter tone films and their profits have reflected that they may have found a better track for their films in recent years. Wonder Woman (2017), Aquaman (2018), and Shazam! had earned the sum of $821.8 million, $1.02 billion, and $364 million throughout the world.

Movies based on comic book characters who are morally dark have found success in recent years. The success of movies like Venom, two Suicide Squad movies, two Deadpool movies, and Joker, are no denial fact. The Box office success of these antagonist-based movies has helped to bring Black Adam to the audiences.

So Warner Brothers are reaching one step closer to turning all their superhero movies into a connected universe again, a universe that will eventually result in another big team-up Justice League movie. It will be interesting to see how the tone of Black Adam is handled by Warner Brothers.

In terms of Black Adam’s timeline inside the DCEU, it is confirmed that it will take place in the same storyline as Shazam! since it’s already been at the end of the Shazam movie. Outside of that, many movies of the DCEU no longer take place in the same world as Marvel does. For example, the movie of Joker does not take place in the same world as the upcoming Batman film.

Is Black Adam vs Superman happening?

Warner Brothers studio has big plans for the future of Black Adam but the Box office collection will decide the ultimate fate of Black Adam’s impact inside DCEU. There is no confirmation of Superman’s cameo in Black Adam, though rumours are swirling around of Henry Cavill’s cameo. Superman’s torso made a cameo at the end of the ‘Shazam!’.

Henry Cavill’s cameo as Superman was supposed to appear in that scene, but it didn’t happen. The Rock has been hyping for a future battle between Black Adam and Superman for a long time. Black Adam and Superman are considered to be two of the most powerful DC characters in existence.

A battle between Black Adam and Superman has the potential to be one of the most unforgettable superhero battles on the screen of all time. So, it is quite possible that Black Adam is going to be a threat inside DCEU and he can be a threatening character like Thanos of MCU.
