Why was Thor not Allowed to Wear the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame?

Thor: God of Thunder who could easily pick & swing Mjølnir (a powerful enchanted hammer), face different kind of enemies be it Chittauris, Ultrons, Malekith, Frost Giants, Surtur & even survive the brunt of the neutron star’s power while making the storm breaker, was not allowed to wear the Infinity Gauntlet & do the snap in order to reverse Thanos’ snap & bring back the dusted one’s in Endgame. In this article we are going to discuss why exactly was Thor stopped by fellow Avengers & instead of him Hulk wore the Gauntlet & did the snap.

Let us first discuss about Thor & his powers prior Endgame & in Endgame quickly. There’s a difference between both.

In Thor movie we could see him getting evolved as a true king. From being a king who lost his powers due to his arrogance to proving his worth for the powers & regaining them. Even in Thor: The Dark World & both Avengers & Avengers: Age of Ultron we could see him using his powers very well & for good. He did his best to use his powers to save lives & maintain peace at a point where he had to stand up against his own brother Loki (in Avengers) as a true king would do. The movie that really justify him as God of Thunder was Thor: Ragnarok. Ragnarok showed why he is known as God of Thunder. In the final battle he easily wiped off Hela’s army without his hammer (as it was destroyed by Hela previously), In a conversation, Odin made him realize that his powers were never dependent on hammer it was just controlled by it, his powers were within himself.

Even in Infinity War he was without his hammer & was even hurt as he saw Thanos killing Loki (his brother) in front of him, still he was strong not only physically but also mentally as he was determined to stop Thanos. He was able to survive the burnt of neutron star’s power while making Stormbreaker (a new weapon for him before facing Thanos), & even able to teleport himself to Wakanda along with Rocket & Groot in the Battle of Wakanda & swiftly kill Thanos’s army & almost kill Thanos with Storm Breaker(his new weapon). But still he couldn’t stop him from doing the snap as Thor didn’t aim for his head, even Thanos himself said “You should’ve gone for the head” it means if Thor would’ve aimed for his head instead of chest he would’ve been able to kill Thanos & stop him from doing the snap.

Few months later, when he learned that Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones after the snap & there was no other way to bring back the dusted one’s he was a bit shaken, he was feeling raged & so he chopped off Thanos’s head in rage, but it was of no use as Thanos already did what he wanted to & destroyed the Stones after snap so there was not other way to bring back the lives of the dusted one’s, Thor was feeling guilty for not being able to stop Thanos & protect other lives. This had a major impact on his mental state. He started feeling unworthy. He went into depression because of it. As a result, there was drastic change in Thor not only physically but also mentally during the five year time post snap (until Scott Lang came up with the time travel solution & the Avengers decided to reunite & do the time heist in order to collect the Infinity Stones & reverse Thanos’ snap). Fellow Avengers were also shocked looking at Thor’s condition as he wasn’t the Thor they’ve known for years.

Thor in Avengers: Endgame

After successfully doing the time heist & getting all the Infinity stones, there was a discussion going on about who should wear the Gauntlet & do the snap to which Thor showed his desire to do the snap in order to contribute somehow & reduce his guilt however he was stopped by his fellow Avengers not just because he wasn’t physically fit but also because his mental state wasn’t fit to do the snap as doing the snap didn’t only want a person who is physically strong but also mentally. The Infinity Stones had soul, mind & many other such powerful stones the person doing the snap needed to connect & give the stones the correct directive of bringing back the dusted one’s. All the Avengers invested not only time & efforts but they also lost Natasha (as she willingly sacrificed her life to gain soul stone), they didn’t want all this to go in vain.

Even Tony Stark stopped Thor as he was worried about him, Thor’s mindset wasn’t perfect at that time to do the snap, letting him do the snap was risky as it would also result some severe damage to Thor. If it would be Thor prior Endgame, he would be able to do & survive the snap easily as he was not only physically but also mentally fit for it. So instead of him it was Bruce who did the snap (the smarter melded Hulk), Bruce knew no other member could handle the Gama radiation of the stones, he said he was made by Gama radiation, so Hulk volunteered to do the snap as he knew it’s outcomes (as they saw Thanos’ hand being completely damaged after doing the snap). Hulk was right as later when Tony did the snap it took away his life.

The Movie Culture Synopsis

So not letting Thor do the snap was the best decision as it would not only mean to risk their efforts but also another friend’s life (Thor’s life) which they were not ready to as they just lost one (Natasha) while getting the Infinity Stones.
